WRITER IN WAITING

A project exploring the day-to-day life of a hospital. Writing, observing, transcribing and exploring with patients, staff and visitors. Part research, part engagement and situational experiment, the project sought to un-foil the emotional and institutional complexities of the hospital as a place of recovery, care, life and inevitably death. Throughout the day, the public were invited to ask questions, contribute to the transcript and respond with their own writing. Writer in Waiting lasted eight hours, from morning till late afternoon at the former Dumfries Royal Infirmary. The transcript later developed a series of poems, un-earthing new worlds from the waiting rooms of the Children’s Ward, entitled ‘Staying & Waiting’.
